Hanna Morgan The Career Sherpa

Today I welcome to the BRAND New You show Hannah Morgan the founder of careersherpa.net  As the career sherpa, she dishes out all kinds of advice on job search, careers, social media and personal branding.

Hannah has been featured on many major career sites such as Lifehacker, USA Today, Business Insider and the Huffington Post.  Her mission is to guide job seekers through the treacherous terrain of the job search by providing a map and the tools necessary to navigate today’s competitive landscape.

One of those tools is her book, The Infographic Resume, which provides essential tips and ideas for how to create visual resumes and portfolios that will make you stand out from the crowd.

PART ONE

PART TWO

The Infographic Resume

All of the questions in this interview revolve around Hannah’s book:

The Infographic Resume

The book is divided into multiple sections and in true sherpa fashion, I use the book as a guide for our conversation during the interview. There is so much good stuff in this book it was difficult for me to narrow down the key items I wanted to cover with Hannah.

I knew I couldn’t cover everything so we focused on the following sections:

  • Online Profiles/portfolios
  • Infographic Resumes
  • Social Resumes
  • Proactive Targeting

Are you ready? Let’s Go!

Online profiles / portfolio

I start this section off with a question that is near and dear to my heart; How important is it to have an online presence today?  Keeping in mind that 93% of recruiters review social / online profiles today before they even call you. Having an online presence is absolutely critical.

So knowing this, what advice does Hannah offer to the job seeker who says “I don’t use that social media stuff. I don’t need a LinkedIn profile or Twitter account”.  Hannah tells people who subscribe to this thinking that it is a personal choice but if you are looking for a job you need to at least be on LinkedIn. The rest of her answer is awesome.

Other key questions covered

What does a good online profile look like; What should be included?

How do personal branding and online profiles help someone sell their skills?

What is the best way to control your online profile?

For people who don’t want to start with a website are there portfolio communities they can join to showcase their skills?

Social landing pages mentioned:

Infographic Resumes

A new way to highlight skills is by using a resume infographic. Infographic seems to be everywhere so why not make your resume one? 90% of the information that comes to the brain is visual and there are 13 million results for the term infographic.

What is the advantage of an infographic resume?  Infographic resumes take the complex info and simplify it with images and pictures. Think of a traditional resume. It’s literally a piece of paper with lots of text.

At a glance, it’s, very similar to an Excel spreadsheet full of data. The data doesn't mean much until you convert it into information. An infographic helps convert your resume into visually compelling information.

Others questions covered in this section:

Is the infographic resume a substitute for a resume>

Why use an infographic resume?

Who can best benefit from using an infographic resume?

Common challenges Hannah gets to using an infographic?

Where would we post an infographic?

Social Resumes

You might be a little confused about the difference between a social resume and an online profile. So I asked Hannah what is the difference between the two?

The social profile is your social media accounts, such as Twitter, Facebook. When thinking about an online profile think LinkedIn.

Outside of LinkedIn here are some other tools available for creating a personal landing page.

Proactive Targeting

In part two of the podcast, Hannah and I talked all about how to get noticed by your targeted company. It comes down to one word; Relationships.  We talk about the tactics that you can use to help you get an employee referral at your targeted company.

We start part two by discussing a post that Hannah wrote referencing her father, who was an executive recruiter. I won;t spill the story here but find out what he was talking about when he said:

“Toss them. I am already working with the people I should be.  If I don't know them, then I don't need to”

This story sets the stage for understanding how to use today’s tools in the 21st-century job search market.  A key to being successful in this market is to practice proactive targeting, a topic in her book, The Infographic Resume. Hannah lets us know how many companies we should target on average as a part of our job search

Topics discussed include:

Can visual resumes and online brands can help others get to know you.

What is the two-step process for proactive targeting you describe in your book.

What is social media really about.

What is the best way for people outside a company to get an employee referral?

Do job seekers need a plan of attack for their job search?

What is hiring ultimately about?
