Answering this question means you will hone in on your area of expertise and start intentionally building your brand to position you as the expert in your field.

This will require you to master the following three steps.

Self-Awareness

Uncover your strengths and how you add value.

Vision

Make a plan to become known for knowing something.

Position

Position yourself using your unique selling proposition.

Step One

Self-Awareness

Self Awareness

Defining your brand requires self-awareness. Self-awareness means you understand you as well as how and where you add the most value.  Getting to this point is not easy. It requires you to answer some tough questions.

ACTION: Using the Define Step ebook, complete the exercises related to defining your skills, traits, values and strengths.  I recommend two assessments the Fascination Advantage and Strengths Finder.

Step Two

Vision

Create Your Brand Vision

Now that you have a good foundation to work with, I have a question for you.  If you got to start your career over and do anything you wanted, what would you do?  It's time to take your newfound self-awareness and dream a little.

ACTION: Using the Define Step ebook, complete the Future You exercise.  Think about your skills and traits, your strengths, and your values.  Use them to define and develop a plan for the Future You.

Step Three

Position

Position Your Brand

A personal brand statement provides you with a way to succinctly summarize who you are, position your brand and describe how you add value…if it's done right.

ACTION: Using the Define Step ebook, complete the exercise for building your personal brand statement. You will need to complete the previous exercises first, however, as this one uses information from the previous exercises.

Worksheets and Frameworks included in the Define step ebook.

The worksheets in the ebook are designed to help you clearly define your brand and what you want to become known for.

FAQ's for the Define Step

What is my brand supposed to be?

This is a common question for those just starting out.  The answer is simple.  Your brand is supposed to be whatever you want it to be because your brand is you.

Your brand is on display in every conversation you have and every time you walk in a room.  The better question to ask is “What do I want to be known for?”

Is a personal brand the same thing as personal branding?

In my opinion, they are not.  A personal brand is you.  It's your strengths, traits, and values all rolled up into the person that is you.

Personal branding, on the other hand, is the intentional act of telling the world who you are and how you add value.

This can be done in a number ways, today, however, it is most effectively done by building your digital brand.

How do I start building my brand?

If you've asked this question, you're on the right website and the right page.  Building your brand starts with defining it.

Everything else in the branding process depends on you, understanding you.
