Recommended book(s) for the show
Since I believe that reading is a necessary part of becoming a BRAND new you, I ask all of my guests what non-fiction book are you either reading now or just recently finished.
Jared mentions two books. The first is a book written by Dale Carnegie called:
How to win friends and influence people (Affiliate link)
Since its release in 1936, How to Win Friends and Influence People has sold more than 15 million copies. Dale Carnegie’s timeless bestseller is packed with rock-solid advice that has carried thousands of now-famous people up the ladder of success in their business and personal lives.
As relevant as ever before, Dale Carnegie’s principles endure, and will help you achieve your maximum potential in the complex and competitive modern age. Learn the six ways to make people like you, the twelve ways to win people to your way of thinking, and the nine ways to change people without arousing resentment.
A million miles in a thousand years (Affiliate link)
This is not the first time this book has been mentioned on the podcast. A Million Miles in a Thousand Years chronicles Miller’s rare opportunity to edit his life into a great story, to reinvent himself so nobody shrugs their shoulders when the credits roll. Through heart-wrenching honesty and hilarious self-inspection, Donald Miller takes readers through the life that emerges when it turns from boring reality into a meaningful narrative.
Podcasting Good to Great (Affiliate link)
Podcasting Good to Great: How to Grow Your Audience Through Collaboration provides a behind-the-scenes look at how podcasters can build influential platforms. The book discusses various strategies for networking, even when you can't leave home to attend pricey conferences. It provides a proven roadmap that will launch you into becoming a great connector and influencer, and ultimately a person that your audience will value even more. The stories shared in this book prove it. Apply Jared's advice and your impact, influence, and yes, your podcast – will go from good to great.
PODCASTING GOOD TO GREAT
Launched on the opening day of the Podcast Movement conference, Jared’s book, Podcasting Good to Great quickly rose to number one status on Amazon. Having practiced what he preaches in the book, Jared had already built an amazing audience through collaboration.
This same audience propelled his book to the number one spot in three categories.
Jared is the original Noticer and is big on being the noticer vs chasing influencers. Chasing influencers, Jared explains, is what many of us try to do in the hopes of propelling our brands, which rarely works out.
Jared challenges that rather than spending your time chasing influencers, being the noticer is a much better way and much more rewarding use of your time.
Being the noticer starts with the realization that no one really cares about what you’re doing or working on unless you take the time to care about others first. By noticing others first, we generate rapport which will eventually lead to reciprocity.
Being the noticer is very much like planting the garden and then watching it grow. It takes time but will yield you benefits down the road.
Frankly, if you’re looking for instant gratification, this formula will not work for you. The formula of being the noticer takes time and does not scale but it is a great long-term strategy.
We even discuss how to apply the “being the noticer” formula to the job search and the importance of being in the 3%.
Hint: As a podcast listener you might just be in the 3% already.
PODCAST MOVEMENT CONFERENCE
Jared is a co-founder of the Podcast Movement Conference. We discuss how the conference came about and the steps necessary to make the conference happen.
Some of the featured speakers at this year’s conference include:
Aisha Tyler – Girl on Guy Podcast
Sarah Koenig – Serial
Roman Mars – 99% Invisible
Pat Flynn – Smart Passive Income
John Lee Dumas – Entrepreneur on Fire
Lou Mongello – WDW Radio
Don’t let the name of the conference fool you into not attending. Whether you have a podcast or not this conference is top notch and I highly recommend it. You can read more about my experience at the conference last year here.
